“Do not neglect your life skills, which should include a healthy dose of financial education.”
- Donald Trump
Before we go further into this discussion, there is an important myth that we need to diffuse. I’ll begin these with a question:
What is your relationship with money? Have you always been successful with money? If making or earning money is a game, how would you want to play it? Do you want to win or lose in the game of money? Either way, we need to make our choice as to the part we want money to play in our lives. We need a dose of financial education, which we unfortunately don’t receive at school. But my idea here is not to teach you about money, but per adventure in my own personal journey on the role of money in our lives to challenge your status quo as per your own financial education.
In this article my focus is not in your ability to earn money per say. But it’s in you being able to learn first-hand how to develop yourself as a successful person with money so that you can understand what is takes to earn money in the first instance. For us to do this, it’ll be important to know from the onset who you are with money as per your relationship with it and to understand how you can optimise this relationship with great certainty so that you can master money.
The reason for this is that your programming (conditioning of the past), could be an impediment on the present and future success you’ll have in earning and managing your money. I have been in this trap of suffering from lack as well as having abundance. Either way the key is to be content with what you have and to realise that you have the power within YOU to become more, do more and achieve more in your dealing with money. You need to be reminded that success is not a “what”, it’s “who”. Who you are is totally trainable and learnable. You can change your relationship with money … from living in lack and limitation to abundance and prosperity.
“It is you that you offer for sale. With your traits ranged in like goods on the shelf. And the first thing to do without fail is to make a success of yourself.”
- Edgar A. Guest
Your Beliefs about Money“If we want to change our lives and shape our destiny, we need to consciously select the word we’re going to use, and we need to constantly strive to expand our levels of choice.”
- Anthony Robbins
Abundance versus Scarcity
You may either have an abundance mind set or scarcity mind set. To have an abundance consciousness is where the individual knows that there is abundance of resources for him/her to create the abundance lifestyle that they desire. On the other hand the scarcity consciousness is where a person lives in fear of scarcity. It comes with the feeling that they are not good enough or capable enough to have or deserve the good things of life. This line of thought defies the individual creative potential. These two ways of being or beliefs systems - poverty and prosperity consciousness are the results of these two forms of beliefs about money. They stem from two different ways of thinking about money. One is based on the fact that in the past much of the world’s prosperity came from personal will applied to the manufacturing and exploiting of limited natural resources. Today, much of the prosperity comes from intellectual capital, which is combination of intelligence, creativity, and personal will … all of which are unlimited.
More is Better versus Less is Better
Each one of us has to make a personal choice as to how much money we need so as to cope in life. It is also important to realize that each one of us creates our own reality. Our perception creates our reality. Therefore, each of us will decide the right amount of money that we need.
Money Is Good versus Money is Bad
We each need to challenge our own assumption about money. However, it is important to point out that money in itself is neither good nor evil. Money itself is energy. It’s our thoughts that imbue this energy with destructive and manipulative power or with healing and trans-formative power. Money is important in developing ourselves and the society at large. Most of our beliefs about money are unconscious and un-examined. When you begin to bring them to the surface, they may seem to be existential reality and not changeable. But like every limiting belief it can be changed to a more empowering one. The first thing is to identify them, and then you can change them.
What are your limiting beliefs about money?
“Until you make the unconscious conscious it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
- Carl Jung
1. NEGATIVE MONEY BELIEFS

Your thought about money which impact your relationship with money.
2. IDENTITY AND SELF BELIEF
- I don’t deserve
- I’m not good enough to make money
- If I’m successful my friends will be jealous and stop liking me

- I will never have enough
- I’m never lucky
- The more money I have the more problem I will have
- It’s impossible to have it all, a loving family, a job I love, great friends, good health, and lots of money
- Life is meant to be a struggle
- Only dreamers think they can get rich, but I’m a realist
- It’s okay to be able to survive each day
- It’s more important to be liked for who I am than because I am rich
Your current belief around money, wealth and success need to be examined so as to understand the underlying principles behind your relationship with money.
- What stories were you told in your family about money?
- What messages have I got from others?
- What judgements and generalisations do I make as a result?
- What meaning do I attach to wealth?
- What difficult feelings do I experience about money now?
- What do feel about success and where does money fit in?
How can they impact on your current experience of success and wealth?
Are you happy with this?
Do these “truths”, empower or limit you?
If your current beliefs about money and success don’t serve you – in fact are limiting; and you are not getting the results you want choose a new empowering ones.
How to turn around your money limiting beliefsYou need to understand the power of your thought. What is your belief about money? What is money? How to earn it? Probably like most people you have not had any lesson about money … say, “money 101 course.” It is possible that most of the knowledge that you had about money has been handed over to you from people that you have associated with in the past. These contacts have obviously contributed to the belief you have now about money. But I have to emphasise that most of these beliefs are unconscious and un-examined. It is possible that they are not serving you in terms of your ability to become savvier in the way you deal with money matters. It is important you begin to bring these beliefs to the surface so that you can see them for what they really are and in the process change them. Hence in this section we’ll be looking at some of this limiting (dis-empowering belief) to see how to turn them around to more empowering beliefs.
Changing your thinking, attitudes and activities around money“If you don’t learn how money works … you spent the rest of your life working for money!”
- Robert Kiyosaki, Author and Entrepreneur
