How do you transform the intangible knowledge in your head to tangible information that people can use to improve their lives? Have you ever wondered why you have so much knowledge and still there’s nothing to show for it? I was like that! I have a wealth of knowledge but don’t ask me in what areas. I began to be curious as to how to use my knowledge to change and empower other people. You will be rewarded for such a lifestyle.
Being able to turn knowledge to profit is an acquired skill. Content in any form – text, audio, video or a mixture of these formats and creatively organised and presented is powerful. Knowledge products drive the economy. One thing is the ability to organise the information and the other is being able to sell the information. Information sales! Listen to the news – the way stories and other information are package (organised) and sold is what drives the media.
With the establishment of the internet have you considered being a publisher of information and selling your own information to those who want it? You’ll be rewarded if you do.
In this article I’ll describe four steps to market your own information product.
Step one: Figure out what information you want to market
The most important thing in any initiative is to know with clarity what it is that you want to do. Your ideas of the information you want to market could be in the area of your interest. But it has to be what other people will be willing to learn and if possible pay for. It has to be a valuable product. It has to be able to enable people to change their lives in one form or another. People are looking for increase. And what will your information product help them to become more, do more, and achieve more? You have to realise that sell has to do with change. So what change will your information product bring to your prospect/customers?
Step two: Evaluate your idea.
In evaluating your idea the key question is whether you’ll be able market it. You should be able to critically evaluate your idea – using the positive, minus and interesting framework attribute to Edward de Bono.
What is positive in terms of the marketability of my product? Some people could send out a questionnaire of survey to find out the answer. You can use any of the search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) to research for information.
What is the minus about the product?
What is interesting about the product?
Note that in answering these questions you need to think in the line of creating products that people would want to buy.
Step three: Decide on the best way to deliver your information.
This is a very key decision. People have their preferences as to the way they access information based on their preferred learning style. The key idea here is for you to realize that knowledge product is any chunk of information that has been recorded in some way – whether in print format, as audio format, or a video format – so that it can be passed on to others in an implementable form. There are dozens of ways to package and sell information.
Below are some the examples that you can adopt:
· Reports, e-books, or books
· Pre-made templates
· Directories of information
· Audio recordings – CDs, MP3s an podcasts
· Membership sites
· Manuals and workbook
The key is taking something intangible – for example knowledge in your head – and turning it into something that others can enjoy and use when you’re not around.
You now have idea about the format for your information product the next stage is --
Step four: Create your product.
What will make you a fortune is the ability to create and sell your own information product. You have to know that crating the product is one thing but selling the idea of your product to your prospects is another thing. It is a skill you can acquire as you go along. But the main thing is to make a good start. If you are not able to create your product you can find people to do it for you. You have to pay them for the service but this depends entirely on you and your budget. You may want to sell your product in your own website or depend on some other sites for the marketing and distribution of your information products.
These steps will give will you a head start in creating and selling your own information product.
